How to transfer a live WordPress website to your localhost manually

In this video post I show you how to duplicate a WordPress website from your live hosting account to you local web server so you can develop, test, troubleshoot, and/or further enhance your site without touching the live website.

I normally work locally on my day to day web projects before pushing the site to my web host. I set up a local web server on my computer by running a software package like MAMP (MAC) or WAMP (Windows) which will include Apache, PHP, and MySQL. I then transfer the finished website to a live hosting account where it is shared with the world.

In this video I am using SiteGround as my Web Host and MAMP Pro for my local web server. But the steps in this video apply to most Web Hosts as cPanel is very common among hosting providers. You can also use MAMP for Mac or WAMP for Windows both available for free.

Below are a few links from some of the tools I mentioned on the video.

Here is the link to the awesome Search Replace DB tool from Interconnect/it:

Here is the home page for both MAMP and WAMP, both great packages for local web development.

Here is a great tutorial on how to install MAMP Pro:

Here are blog posts I wrote on how to install and configure WAMP for Windows:
